Revision Date: Installing Additional Plugins ![]() ![]() ![]() I felt that my example works well for this principle as the ‘white rope’ effect that i wrapped around the text compell’s people to follow the line of the rope from beginning to end this makes them perceive it from being two separate objects to one unified piece.Īnother example of Gestalt’s principle of continuation is shown on the right, it shows how our minds perceive to believe that separate objects are one, this is a good example as it shows what the twigs/branches are actually formed like, as being two separate twigs/branches but when another object is placed in front of it, the tree, your mind assumes that they are joined together behind it. I chose to use a combination of the examples above using the text with a continuing line and also using curves to make it appear as part of the image. I created an example shown below of this principle. I believe if the line was removed our eyes would be firstly drawn to the star detracting attention away from what the creator wants us to see first.įor the continuation principle of Gestalt’s theory i wanted to try and create my own example that has this theory applied to it. This example below of the word space creates a sense of direction for our eyes to follow, we first see the ‘S’ at the beginning of the word space and the curved line that gradiates in thickness from thin to thick gives us a directional path for our eyes to follow that leads us to the star. Continuity in the form of a line, an edge, or a direction from one form to another creates a fluid connection among compositional parts. We are more apt to follow the direction of an established pattern rather than deviate away from it. This example below shows how people can perceive it as two lines when in fact it is four separate lines that meet at the centre, but our minds insist that their joined together. This principle of gestalt’s theory is called continuation, this theory applies when somebody see’s an image and they tend to continue shapes beyone their actual ending points, this also can compel peoples eyes to move through one object and continue to another. I wanted to experiment with this principle and i tried to apply this theory to my own work, the image of the 9 squares on the right is my own work, i kept the shapes identical in size but i also wanted to use anomaly in this piece so i changed the colour of one of the squares, this emphasises this particular square but you still group them together even though it breaks the pattern of similarity making it dissimilar. The image above of the statue of liberty uses the principle of similarity similar to the eagle piece i spoke about, it uses similar shapes (triangles) that appear to us as one single object forming the shape that we recognise as the statue of liberty. Like static and dynamic tension a deliberate use of similarity in composition can impart meaning to the viewer that is independent of the subject matter of the image. Similarity or repetition in an image often has feelings of harmony and interrelatedness or rhythm and movement. One of the reasons that the similarity principle works so well is when we see repetition of forms and colours it become’s very pleasing to the eye similar to the way that a rhythm in music works too. The beatles album cover shows the use of anomaly as all of the pictures have the same face but one in the centre is blacked out, this draws emphasis to this particular image making the use of similarity work very well. The image of the eagle with the points around it uses the principle of similarity because it contains 11 distinct objects but it appears as a single object because all of the shapes have similarity, unity occurs because the triangular shapes at the bottom of the eagle look similar to the shapes that form the sun around it. I have looked at some examples of similarity. There is also another aspect to similarity called anomaly, this happens when a particular element can be emphasized when its dissimilar, breaking the pattern of similarity. This has been used in the past to create single illustrations, images or even a message created from the use of a series of separate elements. One of Gestalt’s principles is called similarity, there are many ways to which a piece of work can have this principle applied, whenever it shares visual characteristics such as shape, size, colour, texture, value or orientation this will make it appear as it all fits and belongs together. Gestalt’s theory is divided into six principles, these are: These theories attempt to describe how people tend to organize visual elements into groups or unified wholes when certain principles are applied. It refers to theories of visual perception developed by German psychologists in the 1920s. Gestalt is a psychology term which means unified whole. ![]() ![]() ![]() In our episode, we ask whether Montañez and his wife were ever compensated for their recipe.
